Popcorn Detector — Never Burn Microwave Popcorn Again

Popcorn Detector is a free web app that uses your phone's microphone to listen to popcorn popping in the microwave. It detects each pop in real-time and alerts you the moment the popping slows down — so you get perfect popcorn every time, with zero burnt kernels.

How It Works

  1. Place your phone near the microwave and tap "Start Listening"
  2. The app detects popcorn pops using advanced audio analysis
  3. When popping slows down, you get an instant alert with sound and vibration
  4. Stop the microwave — enjoy perfect popcorn!

Features

Why Use a Popcorn Detector?

Every microwave is different, and the "popcorn button" rarely works perfectly. Overcooked popcorn tastes burnt, and undercooked popcorn leaves too many unpopped kernels. Popcorn Detector solves this by listening to the actual popping and telling you the optimal moment to stop.

FAQ

Does it work with any microwave?

Yes! Popcorn Detector works with any microwave. Just place your phone 30-50 cm from the microwave door.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It works directly in your browser. You can optionally install it as a PWA for quick access.

Is it free?

Yes, Popcorn Detector is completely free to use.

Is It Safe to Put My Phone Near a Microwave?

Yes, it is completely safe. A properly working microwave is fully shielded — all radiation stays inside the metal casing and behind the sealed door. Your phone will not be damaged, heated, or affected in any way when placed next to a closed, functioning microwave.

What about radiation?

Microwave ovens are designed with metal shielding and a sealed door that keeps all electromagnetic waves inside. Your phone sits outside, where no microwave radiation reaches it. This is no different from placing your phone on a kitchen counter.

Can a microwave damage my phone's memory or electronics?

No. When the microwave door is closed and the unit is in good condition, zero radiation leaks out. Your phone's memory, battery, Wi-Fi, and cellular signal remain completely unaffected.

When could there be a problem?

Only in rare cases with a damaged microwave — cracked door, broken seal, or faulty shielding. If your microwave is in normal working condition, there is no risk. We recommend placing your phone 30–50 cm from the microwave for best audio detection, not pressed directly against the door.

Can I put my phone inside the microwave?

Absolutely not! Never place any electronic device inside a microwave. This will instantly destroy the device and may cause a fire. Popcorn Detector works by listening from outside — just place your phone on the counter nearby.
